As a material, natural beeswax is amazing. It is a totally pure natural ingredient for it is not possible to create synthetically. Aside from Christmas ornaments you can make rolled beeswax candles to bring up the nostalgic holiday season and to have a completely natural holiday decor. A beeswax ornament is also a great gift for Christmas and one of my favorite handmade natural gift ideas, to be honest. Tips for making DIY Beeswax Christmas ornaments

  • Beeswax becomes pliable at 30°C (86°F), so keep the wax sheets at room temperature. When making the beeswax Christmas decorations choose the warmest room to ease the process.
  • Cover the entire work surface with parchment paper or a carton so as not to stain with wax your table.
  • Use your imagination and choose your favorite cookie cutters to make unique designs for your personal handmade Christmas.
  • When using different-colored beeswax sheets, place parchment paper between them to prevent the colors from staining each other, or keep them in their original packaging.
  • If you use a cookie cutter that has really thin forms, use the dull back end of a fork or spoon to gently detach the ornament from the cookie cutter in good shape.

Materials you need for beeswax ornaments

Sheets of beeswax

Choose a rectangle-shaped or square beeswax sheet. Here in Finland, the beeswax sheets are commonly sold in about 22 x 38 cm sizes, whereas in the States the beeswax sheets are cut in 8 x 16 inches so in the end quite similar in size. With this tutorial, you can use any shape or size of beeswax sheets depending on the size of the cookie cutter you have chosen

Yarn and beads of your choice

Choose a yarn for hanging the beeswax ornaments and beads that match the colors of your beeswax and the yarn. Notice to test that the hole in the bead is big enough for your yarn. In this tutorial, I used green jute yarn, like the spruce, and some wooden beads to keep things simple and natural.

Tools and materiel needed for beeswax ornaments on the table: beeswax sheets, cookie cutters, beads and jute yarn.

Tools you may need

  • Cutting board, or other sturdy working surface
  • Paper, carton, or similar to cover the cutting board to ease the cleaning. The wax will eventually leave with hot water and soap, but I have found using a covering paper way easier.

How to make beeswax ornaments using beeswax sheets

Step 1: Assemble the materials

Gather all you need and cover the cutting board or other sturdy working surface with paper or a carton for a less messy DIY moment.

Step 2. Cut with cookie cutter

Choose your favorite shapes of cookie cutters to make your ornaments. For best results avoid cutters that have very narrow parts like long thin legs or tails. I chose a classic heart shape and a Christmas star shape for my ornaments. They are very wide and the beeswax sheet is easy to detach from the cutter. When cutting press firmly down to cut the whole sheet through. You can turn the sheet upside down and press lightly with your fingers for a more sharp and clean cut. See the guiding images below.

Step 3. Make the hole for yarn

Use a pen, knitting needle, or other similar pointy tool to make a hole for the yarn on the top of the ornament to hang it. Make sure not to make the hole too close to the edge so that the sheet doesn’t rip. Press lightly with your fingers around the hole to make it prettier and look clean.

Step 4. Add beads

Cut yarn 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) long and fold it in half. Thread the folded end of the yarn through the bead and then through the hole you made into the ornament. Thread the ends of the yarn through the loop and tighten up – not too hard to not rip the beeswax sheet. Make a knot or two at the end of the yarn and cut off any extra to finalize your DIY beeswax Christmas ornament. Tying the ornament this way keeps the front of the ornament in one direction and prevents the ornament from turning sideways.

Step 5. Decorate your home with your DIY project

Use your beautiful finished beeswax ornament of old charm to decorate your Christmas tree or your home.

How to tweak this project

  • Aside from yellow beeswax (the natural color of beeswax), use the beeswax sheets of different colors. Try white beeswax to make an angel ornament or red beeswax sheets to make hearts!
  • Play with the different textures and choose a satin ribbon or homespun ribbon instead of jute yarn.
  • Make a big beeswax sheet heart or star and decorate it with smaller, different-colored ornaments to hang on the front door.
