Is jasmine a green tea?

Jasmine is not a green tea, but a flower tea made with jasmine flowers. The beautiful white flowers of jasmine are commonly blended with green tea or other teas. Then it is called generally jasmine tea or more accurately “jasmine green tea” or, if blended with black tea, similarly “jasmine black tea”.

Because of its scent and flavour, Jasmine gives the plain tea leaves a floral twist. Jasmine tea might be quite expensive, especially if it has jasmine buds or is the jasmine pearls tea (more about it below), and whole tea leaves in it. The more crushed and blended with branches and bits and pieces the tea is, and if jasmine is added as petals, the more the quality and price sink. And so does the flavor, too.

Jasmine Pearls

The highest quality jasmine tea is called jasmine pearls and does not actually contain any jasmine petals because of the special jasmine tea scenting process. Jasmine pearls are tea leaves that have been scented with jasmine petals (6 to 7 times). The tea is refered as pearls because the tea leaves are rolled into “pearls” to preserve the scent of the flowers.

  • 2-3 tsp honey , runny
  • 2-3 tsp lime juice

Garnish

  • jasmine flowers or lime slices , optional

Instructions

    1. Pour cold water into a large-mouthed bottle, jar, or pitcher. Add jasmine green tea and runny honey. Close the lid and shake a bit to mix. Place the bottle into the fridge to cold-brew overnight for about 8-12 hours.
    2. The next day, squeeze the lime juice and mix with the cold-brewed and sweetened jasmine tea.
    3. Serve from beautiful glasses filled with ice cubes and garnish with jasmine flowers or lime slices.
      Enjoy cold and fresh.

Notes

- Use runny honey to dissolve it better with cold tea.
- Coldbrewed jasmine green tea stores for about a week in the fridge; just add fresh lime juice right before serving.
